PADI Divemaster

(Please visit PADI's DIVEMASTER page to learn more.)

Are you ready to enter the elite circle of diving professionals? The PADI Divemaster Course expands a diver's level of knowledge, skill and ability to the leadership level. Deeper study into the different aspects of SCUBA diving, as well as intensive training in the pool and ocean, will challenge the diver both mentally and physically. Upon completion of this course, the Divemaster will be certified to lead and supervise other divers on guided dives and to assist instructors during dive training. If you are serious about diving and want to rise to a level of competency which only 10% of the diving population achieves, then the PADI Divemaster Course is your path toward a career as a dive professional.

Prerequisites to begin this course are certification as Advanced Open Water Diver, certification as Rescue Diver, current certification in CPR and First Aid, plus completion of 20 logged dives. Most importantly, though, you must have demonstrated both interest and ability in helping other divers and working with students. You must be self-reliant, comfortable in the water, and demonstrate a commitment to safe diving practices. We can teach you diving skills, but your personal outlook on diving practices, your attitudes, and your interpersonal skills are qualities you bring with you to the beginning of the course.

From the above, it should be obvious that we are quite selective in who we will accept for Divemaster training. But if you're the right kind of person for divemaster training, that statement will not intimidate you.  Come talk with us about your interests if you would like to become a PADI Divemaster.  We are always looking for people who want to pass along their love of diving to the next generation of divers. For example, here is one of our recently certified Divemasters: Rod Jenkins.

The PADI Divemaster course is different from other courses in that a divemaster candidate typically progresses through the course at his or her own pace and interacts one-on-one with the instructor.   Among other things, you will have to complete 8 exams, 4 endurance tests, skill circuit training, an underwater mapping project, and you will have to assist the instructor with various classes.  Thus, an extensive internship is required in order to complete your training.  During your internship, you will function in several different settings (e.g. classes, guided tours) exactly as a certified PADI Divemaster would function.  However, your instructor will be with you and formally in control of all in-water activities involving students.  The instructor's role as regards your training will be to observe your performance in front of students/clients and then give you feedback and suggestions afterwards.

You should expect to spend at least 3 months working towards your PADI Divemaster certification.  It is very rare, though possible, that a candidate is able to complete the full course in less time than that.

Costs:  Course tuition for the PADI Divemaster course is $500, payable at course start.  To begin, you must demonstrate that you meet the prerequisites mentioned above and be selected for divemaster training by your instructor.  You must submit a RSTC Medical form signed (during the past year) by a physician indicating that you are cleared for diving.  Note that this is different from the non-professional courses, where you are required to obtain a physician's signature only if you answer "yes" to one of the conditions listed.

Required Materials:  Divemaster candidates must have a current version of these required materials:
