PADI INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE (IDC) STAFF INSTRUCTOR

As a seasoned PADI Instructor, you have wisdom and experience to share with up-and-coming PADI leaders. As an Instructor Development Course (IDC) Staff Instructor, you help bring up the next generation of PADI Instructors while gaining in-depth instructor-trainer knowledge.
To become an IDC Staff Instructor, you must first be a PADI Master Scuba Dive Trainer. Then you gain added knowledge and experience by taking the IDC Staff Instructor Course. We will offer IDC Staff Instructor training coincident with each IDC we conduct, so the training schedule is the same as for the Instructor Development Course.
What's Involved? The PADI IDC Staff Instructor course is designed to provide PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainers with the additional training necessary to staff PADI Instructor Development programs. This course builds upon the IDC Staff Instructor candidate’s experience and abilities as a dive educator while concentrating on developing evaluation and counseling skills. Through independent study, classroom sessions, guided evaluation training and an internship, IDC Staff Instructor candidates learn to teach the PADI Assistant Instructor course and assist with instructor development programs.
There are 4 steps which must be completed in order to become an IDC Staff Instructor:
Step 1: Preassesment. There are several different areas in which the candidate must demonstrate proficiency before continuing training.
- Dive Theory Exam Overview: Demonstrate acceptable performance on the Instructor Dive Theory Exam by scoring 80 percent or higher on each of the five sections and having each missed item reviewed to achieve mastery.
- Standards and Procedures: Demonstrate acceptable performance on the Assistant Instructor Standards Exam by scoring 80 percent or higher and having each missed item reviewed until mastery is achieved.
- Skill Evaluation Session: Score 80 points or higher (average 4.0 per skill) by demonstrating the 20 skills listed on the PADI Skill Evaluation with no skill demonstration scoring less than 3.0.Score 80 points or higher (average 4.0 per skill) by demonstrating the 20 skills listed on the PADI Skill Evaluation with no skill demonstration scoring less than 3.0.
- Knowledge Development Microteaching Presentation: Score a 4.0 or higher on a knowledge development teaching presentation.
- Confined Water Teaching Presentation: Score a 4.0 or higher on a confined water teaching presentation.
NOTE: All of the above except for the Dive Theory Exam Overview MUST be completed before proceeding to Step 4, auditing an IDC.
Step 2: Knowledge Development Sessions. There are four required presentations:- The IDC Staff Instructor Course Orientation
- Instructor Development Standards, Procedures and Curriculum
- How to Organize and Conduct the PADI Assistant Instructor Course
- The Psychology of Evaluation and Counseling
Step 3: Evaluation Training. Here, you will learn to evaluate student presentations and to counsel effectively in order to help IDC students improve their performance. The specific IDC Staff course requirements are:
- Demonstrate consistency in teaching presentation evaluation my matching the control score on at least four out of the six knowledge development evaluation criteria sections for two out of three knowledge development presentations.
- Demonstrate consistency in teaching presentation evaluation by matching the control score on at least three out of the five confined water evaluation criteria sections for two out of three confined water teaching presentations.
- Demonstrate consistency in teaching presentation evaluation by matching the control score on at least three out of the five open water evaluation criteria sections for two out of three open water teaching presentations.
Step 4: Practical Application. Candidates must audit a complete IDC by observing all 20 required IDC Curriculum Components.
COST: Tuition for the IDC Staff Instructor course is $500.
