SPECIALTY INSTRUCTOR
(Please visit PADI's SPECIALTY INSTRUCTOR page to learn more.)

After becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI), you'll want to be able to teach PADI specialty courses in order to help your students advance their skills to the next level and to introduce them to new areas of diving. This keeps your students active in continuing education, helps you build certification credits for advancement to higher PADI instructor ratings, and, most importantly, can provide you with fun teaching opportunities.
When teaching PADI specialties, you are teaching students who already know how to dive. That means there's usually an opportunity for you the instructor to have some fun diving at the same time that you are helping your students gain new skills.
Let us help you earn the specialty instructor ratings which interest you and which would allow you to teach the most classes right away. From our experience, Enriched Air Diver and Dry Suit Diver are the most often requested specialties in California. But we receive plenty of requests for Deep Diver, Emergency Oxygen Provider, Underwater Navigator, Underwater Naturalist, etc. You should seriously consider a Method 1 application (Specialty Instructor course taught by Course Director) for those most popular specialties so that you can start teaching them sooner rather than later.
Cirriculum: The goal of specialty instructor training is to give you the tools you'll need to conduct effective specialty training. You will present one microteaching knowledge development presentation from the specialty diver course outline. You will demonstrate mastery of all knowledge development and water skill performance requirements for the specialty diver course. In open water, you will conduct a practice teaching assignment and demonstrate all open water performance requirements for the specialty diver course. Finally, we will have a discussion of the costs involved in the pricing of specialty training and discuss successful marketing and promotional techniques to promote specialty diver training as part of the PADI system.
Costs: In general, we will charge $125 for each specialty instructor course. The exception would be for a course like Altitude Diver or Wreck Diver Specialty Instructor, where there are also travel costs involved. See also our page on Master Scuba Diver Trainer preparation course, where we will offer 5 specialty instructor ratings for the price of 4.
Schedule: Specialty Instructor training can be arranged to fit your needs. If you want to get started teaching a particular specialty, come talk with us now to see how we can get you going in that specialty soon.
